I think that the work can be really complex within correctional health care. You're dealing with very complex cases of trauma, of personality disorders, so your caseload can be extremely diverse and the work is incredibly rewarding because you're not just going into hospital and supporting individuals who can easily obtain care, but you're supporting a patient caseload who have a significant history of trauma and mental health needs that haven't been met. I think one of the biggest misconceptions that I had before starting within CDCR is that it would really limit the kind of actual clinical work that you could do. But there were a lot of different opportunities to use evidencebased treatment and high-quality clinical care that I'd learned in graduate school and work within an interdisciplinary treatment team. If you are up for the challenge, you gain an incredible, valuable clinical experience and you get an opportunity to make an impact on a population that really needs mental health treatment and mental health support.”
